PHILOSOPHY

Architecture is the delicate interface of self and other, interior and exterior, nature and culture.  The architect is a catalyst, a sensitive receptor, and a subtle transformer of a myriad of influences, keeping the balance like a consummate juggler with playful precision and grace.  Our vision builds equally on our clients’ desires and constraints:  limits are opportunities, and complexity, the necessary stuff of a meaningful synthesis.

We work to mediate the dialogue between opposing and interdependent conditions, whether at the scale of a cottage in nature, a public building in its historical urban context, or an entire community plan.

Sustainability is at the core of our philosophy - it is a complex issue that requires a multi-faceted, “holistic” design approach.  Comfort, durability, a healthy environment, energy efficiency, and low-maintenance are but a few of the issues involved.

We strive for simplicity and lasting value.  Our solutions are rational, flexible and efficient in terms of space use, material selection, construction techniques and maintenance. We are concerned with energy efficiency and integrate early in our design both low-tech and hi-tech innovations to reduce energy consumption in our buildings and allow for a comfortable setting. We feel that it is our professional responsibility to create the best possible environment within the given guidelines of a project.
