This new 500 sq. ft.
vestibule addition and main entrance to the Montreal Children's Hospital
was completed in April 2006. The project responded to an urgent need to protect the entry and
reception areas from cold winter draughts. Built under an existing canopy, the new vestibule provides a bright and
welcoming main entrance to visitors of the hospital
The original vestibule design was considerably larger in scope than what
was finally built: it included the renovation of the existing entry, a
new mechanical system, a more articulated facade, and new landscaping.
Due to a significant reduction in the project budget and a new urgency
to begin construction, FMB Architects was asked to propose a cost
cutting strategy. Rather than pare down the original design, a new
concept was developed that better responded to the new budget and
schedule. This involved eliminating all non-essential scope items and
proposing a simplified envelope design. Comprised of a standard curtain wall
system, the entire wall system was executed by a single subtrade, ensuring better schedule, budget, and quality control.
Horizontal fins on the upper mullions and a projecting fascia are the
only ornament on the facade, giving it a certain refinement. The
interior finishes are neutral in colour, with the exception of an uplit
yellow-painted ceiling, which bathes the entry in a warm and inviting
glow.
